The company «Bentley Motors», founded by Walter Owen Bentley, opened in Kricklwood in north London in 1919.

The founder of the legendary aristocratic car brand W. Bentley developed his first car with a 3-liter "quad" in cooperation with F. Barges and H. Barley. In Autumn 1919, Walter Bentley showed his first creation at the Motor Show in London, but was able to develop production only after two years. By the way, from the very beginning Bentley aimed at production of prestigious cars. Displacement of three-liter made a car unpurchasable for ordinary motorists, and its unique for that time warranty period of five years attracted the attention of wealthy people. The car wore a plain name - 3L, which meant the presence of a 3-liter engine. In the future, this designation has become a tradition. And only since about the mid-twenties there began to appear words in the name, for example, Big Six.

Bentley, not bothering himself with extra design refinements, paid special attention to the technical side of the issue. The main purpose of the cars he saw in the road racing victories. Indeed, it rarely happened so that cars of Bentley did not win sports. One of these was the model with Roots rotary supercharger for 4.5L engine placed in front of the radiator.

This car was designed for the well-known racing driver and industrialist G. Birkin.

In those years the car has become one of the most powerful and fast, and despite the critical attitude to it from Bentley himself, the company has brought him great fame.

Cars of 6.5L model and its sports version of Speed Six were assembled in small quantities in the period of 1928-30. During three years this car has twice won the race at Le Mans in Brookland.

Production of 8L model – the most expensive and the most exclusive one in the range of the company was started in 1930.

The beginning of the thirties was marked by the loss of its independence by the «Bentley» company. Thus, under the mediation of the «Napier» company Bentley became part of the other luxury car company - «Rolls-Royce». With this there started a new stage in the history of the company, which had not downplayed previously earned prestige.

The first Bentley created in cooperation with specialists from Rolls-Royce was a model of 3.5L (1933). 4.5L model based on Rolls-Royce 20/25NR and Rolls-Royce25/30 HP appeared in 1936. Starting from 1933 there was made seven models very similar in construction and design.

Gradually, the production of the Bentley car had to move from Derby to the Rolls-Royce factory in the town of Crew. And the first fully formed model there was Mark-VI, put into production a few months after the end of the World War II.

The basis for this car was the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith. And since 1955, all models were copies of Bentley Rolls-Royce. Nevertheless, despite the structural similarity of the two brands there was the main difference among them: Rolls-Royce - a representative vehicle and the seat place of its owner is at the rear behind. While Bentley, on the contrary, is a car for those people who can and who love to drive.

Presentation of the Mulsanne model took place in 1980 and two years later its 300-horsepower turbocharged version came into being and a couple of years later – its simplified version - the Eight.

Other models were created by the so-called Project 90, with different bodies, and some external differences from the counterparts of Rolls-Royce - Turbo R and Brooklands. Continental model only had never had any analogues. The family of these expensive sports coupe is primarily intended for the young and ambitious millionaires who consider sports cars such as Ferrari seem to be too utilitarian and lacking in comfort. Continental cars manufactured now are of three major modifications - R, T and SC. The R model is the cheapest in the family (314,000 dollars). It has a distinctive finish, as well as comfortable and at the same time fine tuned for a quick ride suspension. Model T has the base shortened by 100 mm, a more sporty suspension and a powerful engine of 426 hp. But the most interesting thing here is a modification of the SC (Sedanca Coupe) with a rigid retractable roof. It is a closed coupe in the normal state, but if you want then part of the roof above the front seats can be automatically retracted.

Changes taking place in the automotive world led to «Bentley Motors» coming under the control of «Volkswagen AG» in 1998.
