Erich Bitter - the founder of the company - was born in 1933 in a family of pure Germans. His first steps in the auto world Erich started with sports, and his first car was the NSU II. Then, riding a frisky car Porsche and Abart, the young racer has proved to be the best hand. And yet, whatever good it was, but sports career did not suit him.
Erich Bitter in his 26 years, opened his own business of selling car parts In 1969. This field of activity has brought a good income, but it did not carry the boy away. He intended to aim at higher targets. Motor vehicle was the true name of his aim that was the proper thing. He has long harbored a dream of producing a sports car in the Italian style, but the base at the same time had to be from the series of German cars. It would seem so simple, but at that time very unusual.
Something similar in principle has already been realized in Turin by "Intermehanika" in 1970. Something Italian, not the "compartment", not "spider" on the basis of the American Ford Motor V8. Erich Bitter decided to do the same thing, but using the relationship with Opel, and in 1971 presented his vision on the base coupe Opel Diplomat. The result of the painstaking work became a car, whose name - "Intermehanika-Indra." Having signed an agreement to sell low-cost, Erich laid the foundation for his restless career.
The first baptism of fire for still a young company, founded in the west of Germany, was successful. And the same of 1971, using all the same base from Opel, Erich is now planning to build a luxury sports car version. The purchase order for the supply of bodies was given to the «Frua» company – Italia craftsmen of style.
When creating a sports car the main focus was primarily made on the reduction of background noise and the increase of the driving dynamics at the same time.
The debut of four-seat coupe Bitter CD was held in Frankfurt in 1973. Based on the Opel Diplomat sedan with a V-shaped 8-cylinder 5-liter engine capacity of 230 hp he was just fine. Italian style and German technicality became the best solution for not only the speed – 210 km/h but for those requirements which could be claimed by buyers. In general, the car was a success. But even so, Erich Bitter yet decided to have his creation changed.
So, from September 1979 to December 1980 he worked on the new model Bitter SC. Now Erich used the basis of Opel Senator and a 3-liter 6-cylinder in-engine with 180/210 hp.
At the end of 1981 Bitter produced an open version of the SC. But that was not all. The success of the business initiated predicted the emergence of all-wheel drive versions SC 4WD in 1982. The next two years brought the updated coupe with 3.9-liter engine of 210 hp and a new 4-door 5-seater limousine SC-sedan.
It seemed that nothing better could be wished. Live and feel happy. But this was not enough for Erich.
And in 1984 Bitter exhibited a prototype of a two-seat open car Rally Roadster was built on a platform of Opel Manta, with a 4-cylinder engine of 2.2/2.6 liters and 165 h/p. Although the project was just only a search for a new brand image, it was he who made his colleagues to depart from the traditions laid down by Bitter.
In the second half of the 80's cars of this brand went through a crisis, which led to a choice - "either-or" in 1986. They had to revise not only the program of production but also of communication. The only real partner in the car-body design became the Italian «Ilsa Maggiora», and the production partner - the Austrian «Steyr» (That offered its production facilities and finance for the emergence of a new car). Thus, the company once again was able to get on its feet.
With new investments in Frankfurt in 1987, Erich Bitter showed Type-3 project based on Opel Omega. Three-liter 177-horsepower engine with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed gearbox and weighing 1490 kg. was able to accelerate the car to 227 km/h. A year later in Geneva with the help of the same Italians was popping up a new 4-door sedan. Further, in 1990-91, the company has improved the 3.9-liter engine of 230 hp. Speed indicators now ranged within 240 km/h.
Financial difficulties finally broke Erich Bitter and forced to wind up the production of elegant German cars. But a passionate desire to continue to produce cars under their own name forced to seek new investors.
The search took the German businessman to New York, where he thought he would get the amount of $ 7 million to start the production of his new sedan Berlina. He brought to show its prototype as well. The body was made of fiberglass, although mass production was planned for the steel version with a hood and trunk lid made of composite material. But the base was from the very real Opel Omega, though increased slightly in length. The relatively short bonnet smoothly went into the massive bumper with a built-in and huge (like with the predecessors) facing of the radiator. Retractable headlights were left as an integral feature of Bitter, which was supported above all, by the loyalty to tradition.
The own plan of Bitter was the Production of these sedans by the German company «Karmann», and not in his own workshop with a small staff of employees. Fine-tuning of engines will be done by «Irmscher», and the main chassis components will go directly from Opel. While America was, still is and will be in the future the only stable and reliable market.
That's the way Bitter and his brand hope to get a good profit in the nearest future, because the planned price of the heavily instrumented model of Berlina shall be $ 79,000.
