The name «Mercedes-Benz» came into being in 1926. It is currently a subsidiary of the «Daimler-Benz» Group.

Gottlieb Daimler died in 1900 and the business was continued by his son Paul Daimler. The company management was taken over by Wilhelm Maybach, who had worked for Gottlieb Daimler many years before.

Same time in 1900, he began to develop a new vehicle. The car had a standard layout of engine: in front, under the hood there was a four-cylinder engine of 35 hp power capacity and a radiator.

The drive was made to the rear wheels through a gear transmission. The first vehicle was made a two-seater racing car, and in the honor of the daughter of one of the owners of the company, Emil Jellinek – the racer, the model was named «Mercedes».

Driving the modified Mercedes Jellinek came first at the next race in 1899. Since that time all the cars made by «Daimler-Benz» began carried a beautiful woman's name.

In 1921 the Mercedes company was just the first to produce a supercharged engine, and in 1923 – the six-liter engine model, which became a basis for the car modification with the short-wheelbase chassis - the “Model K” and later the “Model S”.

In 1928 alone the cars of this model won 50 victories in different competitions, and this gave rise to the creation of a new modification - Model SS, with engine capacity of 7 liters and 200 hp.

In the first half of the 40s Mercedes received a large number of orders for luxury cars.

Model 600 was manufactured in 1963 the. The car was conceived as a competitor to the executive class cars of the «Rolls-Royce» company. Today, Mercedes S600 with the 12-cylinder 6-liter engine possesses a very powerful and reliable power plant and surprising agility for his size.

Now the «Mercedes-Benz» company is still ranking at the top of the automotive industry same as a hundred years ago.
