Horacio Pagani comes from a line of Argentinian bakers. He grew up at Argentinian Santa Fe. Pagani was self-taught and he was so much experienced at sports car engineering that created his own engineering company at the age of 17. The company soon became very popular and all auto manufacturing companies of the country started cooperating with it. The only issue that young Pagani faced that didn’t let him go global was the absolute underdevelopment of the Argentinian automobile industry. Then this thriving young engineer had to leave his business and return to the homeland. It was a very adequate choice since Italy has always been the country of miracles if to talk about sports cars.

In 1983 Horacio moved to Modena where many of Gran Turismo enterprises were located. The young engineer was trusted to sweep the plant facilities of the renowned Lamborghini! It must be said that the Italians were very open-hearted and even the yard-keeper could take a word with the owners of the legendary company. Very soon after Pagani turned from gardener into agronomist and even sooner was he appointed to the post of the leading designer at Sant'Agata Bolognese! Nevertheless Pagani wasn’t going to settle down and shortly he understood that even Lamborghini standards lack finish and are far removed from the top of the technical progress. For this reason in 1991 Horacio established his own company called the Modena Design. Except from sports car design, the company carried out researches concerning composite carbon fiber reinforced plastic. These research works predetermined the future success of the company – in the early 90-s the carbon fiber was the craze of the day and even very large companies tried to reach success in production of carbon fiber. It was a true carbon fiber boom and manufacturers of different products rushed to offer something a-la-carbon. Horacio Pagani became a millionaire in a matter of just a few years! The composites were considered to be a highly sophisticated field and the clients were ready to pay a world of money for them.

Such a sudden success allowed Pagani to return to the dream of making his own ideal supercar that would excel even Lamborghini. This is how the Argentinian story all started.

The reputation of Pagani in the car world of Argentina was high enough and one of his admirers was none other than the greatest Juan Manuel Fangio.

The influence of seignior Fangio in the international car world couldn’t be underestimated and friendship with Fangio provided Pagani with such advantages that the initiators of even more ambitious projects could never even dream of. Besides, Pagani got the best recommendations that would have satisfied any carmaker. Maestro Fangio was so much fond of Pagani’s project that he agreed for the new supercar to be called just Fangio! Still the greatest racer had one requirement. “I owe my whole career to Mercedes-Benz and the car with my name can’t have another engine than Mercedes”. However for Pagani who had such a brilliant project and such a “God Father” the acquisition of the best Mercedes engines was not an impossible task. The glorious manufacturer of sports cars from Stuttgart who for many decades had rejected the very idea of official deliveries of their engines to third-party companies and who had never agreed to sell their engines even to the most reputable companies, satisfied Pagani’s request straight off the reel! That way the biggest challenge concerning the engine choice was met for any company producing Gran Turismo.

All the other issues that a new company could have faced seemed to be much less complicated. The financial backing that was usually the greatest problem for such projects wasn’t a big deal for Horacio Pagani. He sold the controlling interest of the Modena Design, being a small but amazingly profitable company. It was how another supercar manufacturer was born in the suburbs of Modena in 1996! The only event that darkened the company’s birth was the death of its protector Juan Manuel Fangio. Nevertheless it didn’t stop the running-on-all-cylinders-machine and Pagani who considered the use of Fangio’s name for the purposes of private commerce to be wrong decided to give the car his own name.

Beyond all doubt it was the most considered and well prepared introduction of a new brand. All the project details including business plan were created as far back as in 1988 and the company was introduced to the market at the car showroom that took place in Geneva in 1999. The connoisseurs who as always didn’t treat this project seriously and considered it to be another still-born project, realized that they were wrong as early as in a year already. It had never happened before that the fans of super expensive supercars all around the world longed for buying this weird creature with a strange look – a four-eyed Pagani Zonda C12 (with 550 HP V12 engine). Zonda is the name for a furious storm wind in the Ands. His energy must have put a great influence on the commercial success of the Pagani’s company as during the first few months Pagani got more than 50 orders (with 100% advance payment). Even today one has to wait for a few years to be able to buy this car!
