The American Vector was founded by Gerald Wiegert. In 1972 he produced his first sports car with rotary engine. The first show of this series took place in Los Angeles in 1976. The first Vector show ended in fiasco …

At first the Vectors were equipped with Chevrolet Corvette engines. These turbocharged engines could develop up to 625HP! They were fitted with front drive Oldsmobile Toronado driveline and had De Dion rear axle. The first Vector was the most powerful and high-speed supercar in the world! However, it was the most expensive car as well - $284 000. Its top speed reached up to 369 km/h! Despite all these advantages there was no demand for it …

The second attempt was taken in 1978 when a trial W8 model shocked the audience and car manufacturers with its shuttle-like appearance. The car looked like a starship. Unfortunately it was a failure again. People were not ready for such a leap of car manufacturing industry and treated it as another business trick. The troubles only started here.

In 1991 the Vector W8 Twinturbo with a slightly altered exterior made its first appearance on that same stage of car show in Los-Angeles. Wiegert didn’t give up and in 1992 he introduced a new Avtech A-WX3 to the public. The car was very similar to W8 but had a different front exterior with smother lines and developed front spoiler. The power capacity of this model reached up to 1000HP! It was incredible. Such a power was produced by a 7L V engine fitted with four camshafts and two turbo charges. The stated speed was 380 km/h. It also had ridiculous prices: $198 000 – for a coupe and $250 000 for a roadster.

This was a time for the Vector drama to reach its high point. The whole story of the company amounted for 22 cars produced! They wasted really much money and put much effort into it. Today looking back at the past it is hard to say what Wiegert’s failure was caused by – either the customers were not ready for such cars of Vector cars just didn’t manage to gain the customer’s affection. Anyway the relationships between the company founders and its stockholders reached the lawsuit point. The company was purchased by V"PowerCorp controlled by Indonesian SHTDCO Group stockholders.
